The Royal Welfare Fund 4 April 2006 Category: Historical Documents Following is a retrospective account of the various institutions created and developed under the patronage of King Paul and Queen Frederica. It was issued when the Royal Welfare Fund devolved to the patronage of King Constantine and Queen Anne-Marie. This is a synopsis of a many-faceted endeavour, as Queen Frederica set a unique example in social charity. The booklet found below covers the following aspects of the Royal Fund: ‘Rural Youth Centres, a program implemented in 260 peripheral villages, in order to 1/ educate farmers on developments in their trade, and 2/ extend cultural understanding and education to a largely illiterate population. ‘Mobile Reconstruction Units’ for Rural Areas & ‘Urban Centres’, two programmes which focused on improving life in deprived areas. Libraries, playgrounds and gymnasiums were built, with the residents taking part in the enhancement of their area. ‘Handicrafts’, through which 3,000 families received salary for manufacturing artefacts, thus both benefiting themselves, and helping to maintain the Greek traditional crafts. ‘Pedopolis’ – Childrens’ Colonies, in the 53 centres founded by the Royal Welfare Fund, over 30,000 children who had been left homeless during the Civil War, found shelter.
