Her Majesty Queen Sofia was born in Athens on November 2nd, 1938; the eldest daughter of King Paul I and Queen Frederica of Greece.

She spent part of her childhood in Egypt and South Africa as a result of her family's forced exile during World War II. She returned to her country in 1946, and after completing her education specialised in Childcare, Music and Archaeology in Athens. She was a substitute member for the Greek sailing team in the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome, where her younger brother, Crown Prince Constantine, won the gold medal in the Dragon Class.

On May 14th 1962 she married HRH Prince Juan Carlos of Borbon y Borbon, and three children were born in the next few years: HRH Infanta Elena on December 20th, 1963; HRH Infanta Cristina on June 13th, 1965; and HRH Prince Felipe on January 30th, 1968. She has five grandchildren: Felipe and Victoria de Marichalar y de Borbon, descendents of Infanta Elena and her husband, Don Jaime de Marichalar, Duques of Lugo; and Juan, Pablo and Miguel Urdangarin y de Borbon, sons of Infanta Cristina and her husband Don Inaki Urdangarin, Duques of Pallma de Mallorca.

Apart from her participation in institutional events, HM Queen Sofia devotes great attention to social and welfare activities. She is the Executive President of the Queen Sofia Foundation and Honorary President of the Royal Trust for Education and Help for the Handicapped, and of the Foundation for Aid against Drug Addiction, as well as of several musical and cultural institutions, as the Reina Sofia school of Music.

She also takes part in various international projects for the development of women in rural communities and the expansion of small businesses among the least-favoured social strata, through the granting of micro-credits.

In the area of culture, Queen Sofia has received important academic distinctions, being Honorary Fellow of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando and the Royal Academy of History. She received Honorary Doctorates from the University of Rosario, Valladolid, Cambridge, Oxford, Georgetown, Evora and New York.
