Prince Michael was born in Rome, in 1939. After the death of his father, Prince Christopher, Prince Michael moved to Spanish Morocco with his mother, Princess Fran�oise of France to reside at the home of his maternal grandmother.

They lived in Malaga, Spain for four years before moving to Paris in 1949. Upon the death of his mother in 1953, Prince Michael resided with his uncle, the Count of Paris. He attended private schools in France, where he received two baccalaureates, before obtaining his university degree from the Institute of Political Science in Paris, in 1960.

After his graduation, Prince Michael went to live in Athens, serving in the Greek Military in Athens and Salonica for four years. For two of these years he lived with the Greek Royal Family, with whom he sustains a fond relationship. In 1965 he married Marina Karella, the daughter of a Greek industrialist. They have two daughters, Alexandra (born 1961) and Olga (born 1971).

From 1965 to 1972, Prince and Princess Michael lived just outside Athens. It was during this time that Prince Michael wrote his first book, History My Sister, for which he received the Cazes Literary Award. He has since published a number of historical and biographical books.
